Ms. Yani Walker

Ayana E.S. Walker is a native New Yorker committed to the empowerment and education of children through the arts, wellness and self-expression.

Walker is currently a Team Leader for New York Cares where she instructs a weekly dance class for children 6-14 years old temporarily residing in a local shelter.  She uses her dance class to foster physical activity in a fun and positive way that motivates her class to embrace their uniqueness and express themselves in a safe environment where the only pre requisite is a desire to have a good time!

Walker’s passion for giving back was instilled in her at an early age, as the daughter of an educator she witnessed the powerful impact one person can have on students. Her Mother believed “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Walker’s father was also committed to making a positive impact in his community. Throughout her childhood she watched her dad coach neighborhood basketball leagues that allowed young boys a positive way to spend their free time while teaching responsibility, teamwork, physical activity and working towards a common goal.

It was only natural that she would eventually combine the two principles her parents equipped her with as a foundation to guide in making an impact of her own. Raised in Harlem, NY, Walker understands the financial limitations of inner city families and recognizes that health is not always a priority when families are facing more pressing obstacles.  Volunteering was a logical way to bridge this gap and provide a way to encourage an active lifestyle free of charge.  Walker is also a volunteer with Free Arts NYC, an organization that provides underserved children and families with a unique combination of educational arts and mentoring programs that help them to foster the self-confidence and resiliency needed to realize their fullest potential.  She also lends her time as a volunteer with Young Media Minds, the HBO sponsored Media literacy program, which introduces middle school students to poetry, filmmaking, editing and comic book writing.  Ayana is a graduate of the University at Albany where she double majored in Communications and Africana-Studies and minored in Journalism.  She is an accomplished media professional and is an Associate Director at HBO where she was also once a mentee herself during her High School years at the Frederick Douglass Academy.

Ms. Walker has also mentored young ladies interested in becoming executives in the entertainment industry as a Mentor/ Coach/Advisor for WEEN (The Woman in Entertainment Empowerment Network).  WEEN is comprised of individuals dedicated to improving the quality of life of women worldwide. Representing the entertainment industry, WEEN has taken a leadership role in the balanced portrayal of women and partners with like-minded organizations and individuals to provide educational programs targeting women.

Walker is currently in the process of launching the Napoli Lotus Foundation in honor of her late Mother.  The Napoli Lotus Foundation will provide need-based college scholarships to New York City’s future leaders.
